If you are considering a new air conditioner, you might like to know that one of the biggest advances in the cooling industry has been the development of Puron® refrigerant, the environmentally sound Puron refrigerantrefrigerant of the future, by Bryant, in conjunction with Honeywell, the foremost innovator in refrigeration technology. And, as it turns out, what’s better for the environment can actually be better for your bank account, too.

For years, Freon 22, technically known as HCFC 22, has been the accepted refrigerant for use in home air conditioning.

However, the use of HCFC compounds is being phased out because they contain chlorine, which, if released into the atmosphere (as when a refrigeration unit develops a leak), can deplete the ozone layer.

Homeowners thinking about purchasing a new air conditioning system or heat pump should look carefully at what this phase-out means as their systems age.

The life expectancy of a home air conditioner can be 15 to 20 years, a new air conditioner purchased now can be expected to last well into the phase-out period.

What does this mean to you?

Rising repair costs:

The homeowner who purchases a Freon 22 system may likely see repair costs rise substantially over its lifetime, due mainly to increased Freon 22 costs as it becomes scarcer.

What can you do about it?

Replace older model air conditioners with newer models using Puron®:

  • Puron® is a refrigerant that contains no chlorine and is now widely recognized as the replacement for Freon 22 in new air conditioners.
  • It was rigorously tested for 3 years before Bryant began offering it to homeowners over 12 years ago, and
  • Puron® is currently the standard refrigerant used in the Bryant line of exceptionally quiet and dependable air conditioning and heat pump systems.

So you see, looking ahead can mean savings long term, for the environment and for your wallet. Economical. Dependable. Environmentally sound. High efficiency air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces are definitely today’s smart choice.

TIPS TO SAVE ENERGY!

  • yearly maintenance on your central a/c unit is recommended! Optimizing its performance will save you money on your electrical bill.

  • change furnace filter regularly - every four to six weeks.
  • clear away debris and weeds from your outside condensing unit to enhance performance.

  • repair any disconnected or crushed ductwork.
  • keep your thermostat set at 78°F or 26°C. The ideal difference between the outside air and the inside air should be no more than 20°F or 7°C – no matter how hot it is outside.
  • turn off you’re a/c when you’re not going to be home, and close your shades or curtains; this should keep it cool enough so it doesn’t take long to reach the desired temperature when you get in and turn on the a/c again, unless it is extremely hot. In that case, set the temperature so the house is 6-8 degrees warmer when you’re away, then lower it when you get in. Otherwise, it may take too long to cool off to the desired temperature.
  • open the windows at night if it is cooler outside, turn the air-conditioner off, and close the windows in the morning before the temperature rises.
  • keep doors and windows closed when you have the air-conditioning on.
  • if you have a two-story house, run your furnace fan constantly for more consistent temperature throughout your home.
